Thereisinjournalismawidespreadviewthatwhenyouembarkoninterpretation,youareenteringdangerouswaters,theswirlingtidesofopinion.Thisisnonsense.
Theopponentsofinterpretationinsistthatthewriterandtheeditorshallconfinehimselftothe"facts".Thisinsistenceraisestwoquestions:Whatarethefacts?Andarethebarefactsenough?
Astothefirstquestion,considerhowaso-called"factual"storycomesabout.Thereportercollects,say,fiftyfacts;outofthesefifty,hisspacebeingnecessarilyrestricted,heselectsthetenwhichheconsidersmostimportant.ThisisJudgmentNumberOne.Thenheorhiseditordecideswhichofthesetenfactsshallconstitutetheleadofthepiece.(Thisisimportantbecausemanyreadersdonotproceedbeyondthefirstparagraph.)ThisisJudgmentNumberTwo.Thentheeditordetermineswhetherthearticleshallbepresentedonpageone,whereithaslargerimpact,oronpagetwenty-four,whereithaslittle.JudgmentNumberThree.
Thus,inthepresentationofaso-called"factual"or"objective"story,atleastthreejudgmentsareinvolved.Andtheyarejudgmentsnotatallunlikethoseinvolvedinterpretation,inwhichreporterandeditor,callingupontheirresearchresources,theirgeneralbackground,andtheir"newsneutralism",arriveataconclusionastothesignificanceofthenews.
Thetwoareasofjudgment,presentationofthenewsanditsinterpretation,arebothobjectiveratherthansubjectiveprocesses--asobjective,thatis,asanyhumanbeingcanbe.(Eventhoughcompleteobjectivitycanneverbeachieved,neverthelesstheidealmustalwaysbeultimategoal.)Ifaneditorisintentonslantingthenews,hecandoitinotherwaysandmoreeffectivelythanbyinterpretation.Hecandoitbytheselectionofthosefactsthatpropuphisparticularplea.Orhecandoitbytheplayhegivesastory--promotingittopageoneordraggingittopagethirty.
