Therearenowsignsthatdonorsmaybemovingbacktomoreopen-endedfunding,whichistobeencouraged.Theyshouldalsoincreasetheirderisoryfundingforthisvitalresearch:stemrustispoisedtoteachusthedangersofcomplacency.
Theworldpopulationispredictedtorisebyanother3billionby2050,yetincreasesinfoodproductionhavestagnated,technologicalfixesarespent,andglobalwarming--andthereturnofdiseaseslikestemrust--looklikelytotakebackmanyofthegainswehavemade.Foodsecurityaffectspoliticalsecurity,andoneofthefirstregionstosufferfromstemrustwillbethevolatileMiddleEast,includingIraq.
