NativetotheUS,pygmyrabbitsweighlessthan1poundandliveintheAmericanWest.Theyarebelievedtobethesmallestrabbitsintheworld.Theirhabitatshavebeendestroyedbydevelopment.Severalpopulations,suchastheColumbiaBasinpygmy,almostwentextinctandweresavedbyzoobreedingprograms.Pygmyrabbitsalsorelyonwintercoverbydiggingtunnelsthroughthesnowtoescapepredators,butlessersnowfallisleavingthemexposed.
